Monday morning, Uncle John Shawcroft, a pioneer resident of this community, died suddenly while he and other members of the family were on a fishing trip near the La Jara Reservoir. Mr. Shawcroft was born September 8, 1847, in Denby, England. He immigrated to this country in 1864, and settled in Utah. In 1874, he was married to Miss Jensen and 10 children, 6 boys and 4 girls, were born to this union. All the children are living and reside in this community. Mr and Mrs Shawcroft come to the San Luis Valley in 1882. They were among the first settlers in this part of the state making their home at Richfield, where they engaged in farming and stock raising. Mr. Shawcroft retired from active farm work in later years. Uncle John was fond of outdoor life and made frequent fishing trips to the mountains during the summer. Last week he and other members of the family were on a fishing trip and camped near the La Jara Reservoir. He seemed to be in the best of health and enjoyed the outing. On Monday morning, August 7, while he was getting his fishing tackle ready for the days sport, the end came unexpected, death being caused from heart trouble. He leaves to mourn his loss, his wife, 6 sons, and 4 daughters, 44 grandchildren, and one great grandchild, besides numerous friends. Funeral servies were held at 11am Wednesday in Richfield, interment being made in the Sanford cemetery.
